The Challenge:
No. 5 Ann Siang Road in Chinatown has a rich and diverse history, but the impressive old shop house needed much attention to bring it back to its former glory. TSC were appointed to transform this building into an all-day establishment and create the branding.
The Solution:
The name we gave it, Oxwell & Co, stems from the building’s location on the lane that lead the ox-carts to the well the early 1900s.
TSC stripped the entire building back to its bare bones to reveal – and celebrate – the original architecture of the building. Plasterboard ceilings were removed to expose existing timber beams, floorboards were sanded and restained, and the walls were taken back to the original plaster work.
The first floor exudes a raucous public house vibe, complete with vintage bar stools, a medieval-chic coat of arms, and hundreds of tungsten bulbs dangling on vintage wires over the 300-year-old Ceylon railway sleeper bar, specially imported from Sri Lanka.
The second floor houses a homely 36-seat dining room with the original floor-to-ceiling French windows which flood the room with natural light. Traditional British pub wall paneling was flown in, and bespoke fabric lampshades in a multitude of classic shapes, hang throughout the space.
The quirky Victorian inspired private dining room on the 3rd floor seats 14 people, offering a more intimate dining experience. The Stripe Collective have injected a sense of humour throughout, from the quirkily painted horn art, through a touch of taxidermy, to the life-sized Ox head carved out of solid teak that hangs on the wall like a trophy – guns included!
All the playful paintings were designed and commissioned by The Stripe Collective – you will see Lord Oxwell himself rubbing shoulders with some classic stars of history’s art world! And all the solid mahogany, leather & velvet furniture is entirely bespoke, lovingly made by TSC’s trusted craftsmen around the region. The creative lighting is all TSC designed too… If you are lucky, you might even find the hidden door leading to another secret room…..
